Our Beginning
The Atonement Catholic Academy was established in 1994 as the parish school for Our Lady of the Atonement Catholic Church. With only 66 students, the Academy did not start with a library until a few years later. A parishioner volunteered to start the library in a classroom of the original school building, and with that generous offer, Mrs. Orianna Miller became our first librarian. The library collection consisted of only three donated boxes that filled one bookcase. Mrs. Miller started a campaign for more books, requesting the students bring in pennies to raise funds for the collection. Thus the school library’s young collection began to grow due to the generous donations of the parish families. Mrs. Miller is remembered for her dedication to the families of The Atonement Catholic Academy and her continued desire to promote strong Catholic values throughout the community.
Our Development
The parish and school continued to grow, with the Academy eventually adding grades through middle school. The school needed to be expanded, and Bishop Bernard Popp and the Superintendent of Catholic Schools were present for the groundbreaking ceremony for the expansion on August 15th, 2003. The extension houses the new library at the heart of the campus. In spring of 2006, Archbishop Gomez blessed the new building housing our current library. Our collection continues to grow along with the students. With the continued growth, the library anticipates expanding to the second level when the new Upper School building construction is complete.
