Early literacy has proven to have a significant effect on a student’s success in school and their life-long earning potential. A long-term study by the Annie E. Casey Foundation showed that millions of American children get to fourth grade without learning to read proficiently, which puts them on the high school dropout track. In fact, 88 percent of students who failed to earn a high school diploma were struggling readers in third grade.
At The Atonement Catholic Academy, most students become proficient readers by first grade and many begin reading independently by the second semester of kindergarten.
The Atonement Catholic Academy's strong academic program takes place in a Christ-centered atmosphere and our students develop a myriad of skills built on this foundation. Respect, self-discipline, honor, and loyalty, are just some of the virtues our students exemplify.
Classrooms provide and active, vibrant atmosphere where learning is fun and teachers nurture and guide each child. Language, memory, imagination, empathy and a positive attitude toward learning are all Lower School achievements. We believe that the primary purpose of the first six years of school is not merely to impart knowledge, but rather to cultivate positive habits. A good habit is a virtue and our faculty and staff help children develop worthy habits. We strive for excellence in the physical, intellectual and spiritual virtues through a challenging course of classical and Catholic education.
“How much better to acquire wisdom than gold! To acquire understanding is more desirable than silver.”
