“For he to-day that sheds his blood with me Shall be my brother…”
-
King Henry V (Act IV, Sc. III)
Dear Atonement Families,
As I returned to campus on Monday, the rousing words of William Shakespeare’s “St. Crispin’s Day” speech came to mind. I was feeling that sense of kinship one develops toward those with whom one does hard things. Especially vivid were the thirty-odd faculty and staff who returned to campus on Thursday to join the administration in laying plans for a successful school-year campaign, as well as the families who spent Saturday morning at their children’s school fortifying its grounds with beauty. In serving together a cause greater than ourselves we truly become brothers (and sisters!).
Have you joined the cause? Unfortunately—fortunately?—Catholic classical education is not a spectator sport. Some parents play golf, some do CrossFit®, some have the perfect yard, some have the keys to the company jet—Atonement parents may excel in these arenas and beyond, but even more impressive is their membership in a peculiar educational partnership.
Atonement’s commitments to virtue and true excellence put us at odds with the drift of things; in fact, they commit us to swimming upstream. That is why it is so important that we, educators and parents, partner together in this work and why I am looking forward to seeing each of you at Wednesday and Thursday’s “Parent-Only Orientations.” Check the website for details.
